The 10th annual Lakewood Summer Meltdown will be held 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 13, along Detroit Avenue between Arthur and Marlowe avenues.
The Meltdown attracts more than 10,000 people who can experience various events, including the Meltdown 5K race, a street festival and live music.
The festival has been sponsored for 10 years by Melt Bar and Grilled and LakewoodAlive, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering safety and vibrancy in Lakewood neighborhoods.
“We strived to create a fun event on a main street that you would normally just drive down,” LakewoodAlive Executive Director Ian Andrews said. “We wanted to give the community something to look forward to every year.”
Festival highlights include the “Water Moose” sprinkler park, a skateboard park and a variety of food venues and food trucks.
The “Water Moose” sprinkler park will be located on the corner of Detroit and St. Charles avenues. This uniquely designed system of multiple sprinklers is attached to a fire hydrant, cooling off kids as they splash around.
A skateboard park will be set up between Marlowe and Belle avenues. The park includes ramps, jumps and rails.
Food choices will include Aladdin's Eatery, Marco’s Pizza and a food truck from Proper Pig. Local brews and more food can be enjoyed at the Gary K. Bish Memorial Beer Garden, sponsored by First Federal Lakewood, near Warren Road and Detroit Avenue. At 7 p.m., Front Porch Lights will play on the Beer Garden Stage.
The street festival also will have booths offering games and prizes by various vendors, along with informational booths sponsored by local organizations.
For runners and walkers, the 1 Mile Kids Fun Run and the Meltdown 5K begin at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively, on the corner of Belle and Detroit avenues. Pre-registration is available for both runs through Friday evening. However, runners can register on the day of the race in person at the corner of Belle and Detroit.
The event will take place rain or shine.
“We’re tough folks here in Lakewood,” Andrews said. “We’ll party in the sun and party in the rain, unless the weather is severe. We’ve worked out all contingencies with Lakewood safety services.”
