Westlake varsity coach loves challenge of leading community swim team

By Ryan Kaczmarski

As the varsity head swimming coach for Westlake High School, Jessica Dye expects hard-working, passionate swimmers on her team. She looks for the same qualities from her kids on the Westlake Recreation team, but she also knows she has to teach the skills of swimming each stroke well, while still making it fun.

“There’s a learning curve (with some of the kids), where in high school, some of the swimmers are new to the sport,” Dye said. “With the summer rec. league, for a lot of the kids it’s their first time swimming on a team. From age 6 – we even have some 5-year-olds on the team this year, too – to age 18, we have a span of abilities, experience and personalities, so it’s fun.”

Dye has seen the Westlake recreation team grow in popularity over the past few years.

“It’s big for us,” she said. “This is my fourth year coaching the rec team and this is the highest enrollment we’ve had (125 members), and with Five Seasons closing, we’ve added some families from there and from word of mouth. It’s been nice for us to have our highest numbers. This year’s team has 25 more members from last year, so every little bit helps.

“Our practice time (6:30-8:30 a.m.) is sometimes a deterrent for some families, but others love it, because they get up, they get their day  going and you don’t have to stop what you are doing to go into practice during the day.”

Coaching the recreation team gives Dye a chance to groom the swimmers before they reach the high school team, and give them a chance get to know her better as a person.

“That’s one of the most exciting parts of doing this,” she said. “You kind of get to see the kids grow. This being my fourth year, I am now starting to see some of the kids I’ve had for two, three or four years – they’ll be starting (varsity) soon.

“It’s nice for (the swimmers) to build that ‘family,’ where I’ve had kids that graduated, who are still coming back for their last season, because they know all the younger kids,” Dye added. “They’re the leaders and the big brothers and sisters for the rest of these guys. It’s nice to see that Westlake swimming is a community and a family, and that starts here.”

The Westlake team swims against the community teams from Bay Village, Rocky River, North Olmsted, Mills Creek (North Ridgeville), Amherst  and most recently Avon Lake last Thursday, where Westlake fell 660-392. The Westlake Recreation Center will host the league’s championship meet, with the 11 and over events held on July 27 and the 10 and under events held on July 28.
