Students attending the Westlake City Schools will have an additional day of vacation this summer thanks to the addition of three teacher training days added to the school calendar.
Originally slated to begin Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day, school will now begin Sept. 4. The district’s Board of Education approved the late changes to the school calendar at a recent board meeting.
However, students attending the new Westlake High School will be required to attend orientation sessions Sept. 3. The program for freshmen and seniors will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Sophomores and juniors will go through orientation from 10 to 11:30 a.m. High school students will be able to download their class schedules beginning Aug. 28. They can also pick up printed schedules from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 at the high school. On Aug. 9, the principal’s office will mail out a packet with information on traffic patterns, parking and senior privileges and other matters.
The two other teacher training days added to the 2013-2014 calendar will be Jan. 6 and Feb. 14. Schools will not be in session on these days.
The district applied for and received waivers from the Ohio Department of Education for the additional training days, meaning the lost school days will not need to be made up.
The waivers are being offered to school districts working on new teaching and testing standards, as well as school safety practices. On the training days, staff members will participate in professional development programs to study ways in which curriculum, assessment and programming can be enhanced to meet the needs of students, district officials said.
