Cozy up to the bar at Humble Wine Bar in Lakewood and soak up the warmth radiating from the eatery’s focal point, a 750-degree pizza oven.
The wine bar, an offshoot of nearby Deagan’s Kitchen and Bar, turns out some good food under the guidance of chef de cuisine Vincent Sanchez. The custom-built pizza oven is the central element of the white-tiled open kitchen. The menu offers 10 varieties of Neapolitan-style pizza, including classic Margherita, mushroom and roasted garlic, and sausage and four-cheese. The pesto chicken pizza is topped with artichokes and goat cheese, while the shrimp pizza is garnished with sun-dried tomatoes and Calabrian chilies. There is even a vegan “sausage” pizza with seitan “sausage” and tofu “mozzarella.” Pizzas are priced from $14 to $15.
Because Humble is primarily a wine bar, the rest of the menu is comprised mostly of antipasti and small plates. Appetizers include Peppadew peppers stuffed with goat cheese ($6), eggplant caponata with pine nuts and currants ($5), marinated mushrooms ($6) and olives with fennel and orange ($6).
Small plates like pancetta-wrapped shrimp ($12), smoked salmon crostini with mascarpone cheese and capers ($10) and spicy oven-roasted nuts ($6) are perfect for sharing over a glass of wine, sherry or port. Other options include dishes like oysters on the half shell with black pepper mignonette ($16), pepper-crusted rare tuna puttanesca ($10) and flatbread with herbed ricotta cheese ($10). Caesar, Greek and arugula salads are also available ($7).
Humble Wine Bar features a variety of cured meats and cheeses. Guests can select one offering ($5) or three ($14) from a list that includes meats such as prosciutto, sopressata, salumi and coppa, as well as cow’s milk, sheep’s milk and goat’s milk cheeses. Charcuterie boards are served with honey, fig jam, housemade crackers and slices of mini baguette. Patrons can also opt for the house red wine or white wine cheese boards ($22). Pick three selections for $9 during happy hour on Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m., or get $2 off a pizza.
You can choose from six wines on tap, 14 to 16 by the glass, 125 by the bottle, craft beers or liquor to accompany your meal. Hot spiked cider is a treat to be enjoyed this time of year. Phoenix coffee is featured.
Humble Wine Bar even has a pastry chef. Emma Scheer tackles double duties, overseeing the dessert selection at Deagan’s as well. Seasonal desserts are pumpkin creme brulee with almond cake and candied almonds, the chocolate tower with crunchy peanut butter ice cream, poached pears and vegan German apple cake ($7).
