Beginning Oct. 14, collection of rubbish and recyclables will take place on Mondays for all residents whose trash is collected by Republic Services under contract by the city.
Mayor Eileen Patton announced the single-day trash pickup at a Sept. 23 council committee meeting. The mayor had sought to have all trash and recyclable materials collected by Republic on a single day since the contractor moved to an automated collection process in June of 2012. City officials believe having the trash and recycling containers out on the tree lawns on a single day of the week throughout the city is better aesthetically.
Republic will mail out postcards to residents informing them that the day of collection is changing, Patton said. In addition, the city will order 50 signs to place throughout neighborhoods indicating that trash collection is moving to Mondays, the mayor said. The city’s annual mailing to residents informing them of the leaf pickup schedule will also include information about the trash collection change, she added.
The collection of bulk trash materials, such as furniture and appliances, will be made on the third Monday of the month, the mayor said.
