The World Cup experience

A Sporting Viewpoint: World Cup mania in the Westshore

By Jim Horvath

I’ve decided to jump right into today’s World Cup match as the USA takes on Ghana in one of the biggest matches in the history of USA Soccer. I’ve ordered up a good ol’ American hamburger and an ice-cold beverage here at the Ironwood Cafe as I await what should be an interesting day!

1:50 p.m.
I’ve been to a couple of places throughout Westlake, and they are all hopping with soccer fans getting themselves ready. I’m anxious to see how this compares to fans getting ready for a Browns game on Sundays.

Right now, it feels like the calm before the storm…

2:05 p.m.
Watching an interview with USA head coach Bob Bradley, who I see coached at Ohio University early in his career at age 22. Talked on the phone with a number of Westshore area high school coaches earlier today. You could tell by their voices just how big this match is today. Chris Marsh of North Olmsted, Mike Besu and Scott Jones of Westlake were ready…

2:28 p.m.
The national anthems have been played. We’re about ready for futbol…the starting lineups are up on the big screen…those blasted horns are reaching a fever pitch…

Here we go…

3:00 p.m.
Well, our worst fears have been realized. Team USA allowed an early goal and trails 1-0 as we approach the 33 minute mark. We just missed a breakaway opportunity! And, I just yelled at the television…

It’s official.

I’m all in.
