The St. Raphael seventh-grade girls basketball B team finished a remarkable season, compiling a record of 23-2. The team won the Cleveland CYO seventh-grade girls B team city championship by beating St. Anselm (Chesterland) in the quarterfinals, Our Lady of the Lake (Euclid) in the semifinals and a previously unbeaten Sacred Heart (South Euclid) team in the final city championship. Two of those wins were by one point.
In addition to the city championship, the team won its West Side CYO division, the St. Francis of Assisi tournament (Gates Mills), the St. Joseph tournament (Avon Lake) and the Lakewood Catholic Academy tournament (Lakewood). In the process, four different girls, of the seven on the team, scored game-winning baskets with under a minute left to win different games.
The streak included winning one game in overtime, another in double overtime and a third by overcoming a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit, while finishing that game with only four players left on the court to play against the opponent’s five players.
The team consisted of Jackie Bain, Maggie Bilard, Margaux Duvall, Mary Farnan, Lizzie Martinez, Halle Orr and Sydney Pochatek. The coaches were Tom Orr, Stacy Farnan and John Farnan.
