The city of Westlake’s “Bases 4 Backpacks” inaugural charity softball tournament will be held Aug. 12. This event is open to any and all men’s softball teams. The double-elimination tournament has an entry fee of $50 per team, and a fee of $15 per game played. All teams need to purchase a child’s backpack and fill it with school supplies from a list provided by the city of Westlake. The backpack must be turned in at the field before the team’s first game is played. The backpacks will be given to needy children for the upcoming school year. Deadline to register is Monday. Westlake Recreation is looking for teams to register for the fall softball season. The leagues include Monday, Wednesday men’s (season starts Aug. 20); Thursday men’s (season starts Aug. 23, teams play double-headers); Sunday men’s (season starts Aug. 19, teams play double-headers); and Sunday coed (season starts Aug. 19). Entrance fee for each men’s league is $325. Entry fee for the coed league is $175. Entry fee includes all balls. Forfeit fees are $125. Registration deadline is Aug. 13. The Sheffield-Sheffield Lake Youth Baseball Association “Boys of Summer” tournament will be held tomorrow through Sunday. The cost is $300 per team. Sign up today for the 20th annual Classic at Mastick 5K, to be held Aug. 8 at the Mastick Woods Picnic Area in the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks. This is an excellent preseason tuneup for cross country teams and challenging for seasoned runners, easy for leisurely runners. Proceeds support the Classic at Mastick College Scholarship Fund. The race times will be 6 p.m. for boys and men, and 6:45 p.m. for girls and women. The entry fee is $20, and only 525 entries are accepted – so don’t wait!
