The Westlake varsity girls cross country team won the team championship for the third time in four years at the Vermilion Invitational, while the JV team defended their title for the fourth year in a row.
Freshman Robyn Hageman and Sophomore Morgan Hansen led the way for the ladies for the second meet in a row while Junior Grace Jenkins and sophomore Madeline Lee packed close behind. Indeed, Robyn looked strong the entire race, while Morgan had her second very strong performance in a row. Grace and Madeline once again ran very fine races as they stayed within striking distance of the lead group. Most impressive is that this group packed together throughout much of the race and crossed the finish line all within 30 seconds.
In the five spot, senior Nora Lee continued to show her importance to the team. Not only did she round out the scoring for the team once again, but she put in her second career PR in as many weeks.
In the JV race, Rachel Collins led the pack with a 3rd place overall finish while Jasmine Welch finished close behind. Gina Campo scored a PR by over two minutes and ran with the leaders for the first 2/3 of the race while Hannah McCarthy and Ingrid Wagner rounded up the scoring for the JV team.
The Magnificat cross country team competed at the Midwest Meet of Champions at Hilliard Bradley High Scool on Saturday and finished 10th out of 12 teams in the varsity event, third in the freshman/sophomore race and seventh in the open race.
The day was led by the youth of the team in the freshmen/sophomore race. The team finished a strong 3rd place. Sara Paponetti was the first Blue Streak in16th place and in a personal best time of 21:44. She was followed closely by Katelyn Lenahan in 18th, Liz Fitzgerald in 23rd, Julie Whitmore in 25th and Mara Bedell in 26th. Both Fitzgerald and Bedell also set personal bests.
The varsity team still is bringing together their talents after suffering from some injury setbacks. Macey Walker had the best finish of the day in 19:56 followed by fellow captain and senior, Katie Kerr. Junior, Angelina Kluzcnik and freshmen Katie Whitmore and Brooke McQuinn rounded out the top five.
The team looks forward to competing on Saturday at the Medina Cross Country Festival.
