Sixth-grader to compete in state geography contest

Benjamin Sposet

Benjamin Sposet

Benjamin Sposet, a Parkside Intermediate School sixth-grader, will represent Westlake at the state-level National Geographic Bee Friday at The Ohio State University’s Mansfield campus.

Sposet qualified as a state finalist by taking a 70-question test and earning one of the top scores in the state. He will compete against about 100 intermediate and middle school geography students for the chance to go to Washington, D.C., to represent Ohio in the National Bee.

The National Geographic Society developed the contest in 1989 in response to concerns about the lack of geographic knowledge among young people.

Parkside students seem to know their geography, as five previous students from the school qualified as state finalists in the contest. Sposet is preceded by Ingold Huang (2002), Ben Aghajanian (2003), Jason Linger (2004), Ryan Milowicki (2006) and Vinay Manayathara (2007).
