School board preparing for more work, additional meetings

School board members are preparing for additional work at meetings for at least the rest of this academic year.

Starting in December, the board plans to have at least one Thursday work session meeting a month through June. The meetings are in addition to the regular meetings held the third Wednesday of the month. The work session meetings are scheduled to start at 7 p.m., as opposed to the meetings the third Wednesday of the month, which currently start at 6:30 pm. The later meeting time was set up to allow additional time for people to get to the meeting.

Board President Tom Herbster said setting the meetings up stems from the district having several major issues to deal with in coming months.

“Superintendent (Terry) Krivak thought it would be a good idea to have some additional meetings set up to deal with those issues,” he said.

Herbster said some of the topics for the meetings likely will include all-day kindergarten and the new third-grade reading regulations, as well as assorted academic issues for the district.

“We’ve got a few items to deal with, that’s for sure,” Herbster said. “It’s best to have enough time to consider what’s involved with all of them.”

As in other district meetings, Herbster said he anticipates there being time available for public questions and comments.

“These issues are going to affect the public and their children, so I would imagine we will have some time set aside to answer questions from the public or get some input from them,” he said.

Officials have tentatively set the work sessions for the first Thursday of the month, but retained the ability to change them due to holidays or other potential conflicts.

Herbster said at this point, the Thursday sessions are for the remainder of this academic year.

“We’ve only got them through June at this point,” he said. “If we want to revisit that, we can have a discussion on it.”

District officials said the additional meetings would cost about $7,500 in additional per diem costs for the school board members.

As of Nov. 28, the dates for the Thursday meetings were: Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Feb. 7, March 7, April 11, May 2 and June 6.
