A Rocky River resident died early Saturday morning in an East Asplin Drive house fire according to fire department officials.
The victim was homeowner Robert Eynon, 89, who lived in the home by himself. No one else was present in the home at the time of the fire, which according to police spokesman Det. Ken Thompson, began late on the night of Dec. 28 and continued through the early morning hours of Dec. 29.
Rocky River firefighters received several 911 calls from neighbors at about 3:45 a.m. on Dec. 29, and it took about an hour to extinguish the flames. The home was completely destroyed.
Thompson said that the state fire marshal has yet to determine the cause of the fire, however, he said that the victim was a heavy smoker. The fire is thought to have started on the first floor in the southeast corner of the home where Eynon is said to have spent most of his time.
