Portions of the Rocky River Civic Center will remain open throughout the expected 10-week construction project, which will replace sections of the center’s roof that have been leaking due to an improperly designed vapor barrier. The work is scheduled to begin July 18 and to be completed by the last week in September.
The project is being financed by a $500,000 court settlement and the original construction bonds from the 2007 fitness center addition.
According to information provided by the recreation department, much of the fitness equipment will remain available for use except for a limited period of time. The only areas to be closed for the majority of the project are the indoor pool and aerobics studios. Beginning July 18 until the end of the project, fitness classes and Silver Sneakers classes will meet in alternative areas of the building. Silver Sneakers participants may also visit another facility hosting the program.
Between July 18 and 30, other areas of the civic center will be in operation, including the fitness center, gym, track, Kid’s Cove and playground. The annual maintenance shutdown for the entire facility is scheduled for July 31 through Aug. 9, during which time fitness equipment will be moved to the first floor. At this time, routine work such as gym floor refinishing and painting will take place. From Aug. 10 until the end of the project, the gym, track and relocated fitness equipment will be available. The Kid’s Cove schedule is to be announced. According to Recreation Department Director Tom Fattlar, most of the equipment will be brought downstairs and set up in the pool lobby area, or on the second floor near the track.
Civic Center members will be able to use the outdoor Waterzone pool between Aug. 15 and 28 free of charge and Silver Splash classes will move to this location.
During the month of August, Civic Center members can make reciprocal use of facilities at the Gemini Center in Fairview Park and the Westlake Recreation Center. The indoor pool at Westlake will be available from July 18 through Sept. 4. Both of these facilities will also close for annual maintenance during the Rocky River Project. The fitness center at the Gemini Center will be unavailable Aug. 15-21, and the pool will be closed Aug. 15-28. At Westlake, the dates for the fitness center closing are Aug. 8-14, with the pool and gym unavailable between Aug. 8 and 21.
Civic Center hours for the months of July and September are Monday-Thursday, 5:50 a.m. to 9 p.m.,; Friday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through July 24. The center will be closed Sundays from July 24 until Sept. 4.
August hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Friday and 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
A schedule of classes will be available this week along with information on flex pass pricing and payment options. As with all construction projects, this schedule is subject to change. Updates will be posted at www.rrcity.com/rec.
