Pirates icemen finish great regular season on high note

The Rocky River varsity ice hockey team will start its quest for a Baron Cup I championship tonight against St. Ignatius at the Brooklyn Ice Arena.

The Pirates finished off an extremely successful 2012-13 regular season in which they had an overall record of 23-6-1 and a record of 6-3-1 in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League Red North East division, good enough to finish tied with Hudson for third place. Rocky River finished the season on Jan. 30 with a 4-2 victory over division winner, Walsh Jesuit.

Eric Sperli scored two goals for the Pirates in the victory, while Kyle Kopchek tallied a goal and an assist. Tommy Garibaldi scored a goal, Matt Lowry had two assists and Bobby Perez had an assist. Pirates senior goalkeeper Jake Nicholson tallied 30 saves in the victory.

Sperli finished the regular season ranked second in scoring in the Red division, with 19 points (13 goals and 6 assists). Rocky River’s Brandon DeLano finished tied for 10th in offense, with 12 points (3 goals and 9 assists).

Nicholson finished eighth in goalkeeping with his 1.827 goals against average for the regular season.
