Meals on Wheels seeking donations, volunteers

By Kevin Kelley

Fairview Park

Fairview Park Meals On Wheels is in need of monetary donations and volunteers.

The service, which delivers a cold lunch and hot meal to homebound people, currently costs recipients $7 per day. But the organization is planning to raise the fee to $8 in January due to rising costs, said Chairwoman Barbara Kern.

Many Meals On Wheels recipients are elderly and on fixed incomes, so donations are necessary to keep costs of the service down, said Kern, who has been running the program for four years.

About 70 drivers and food preparers volunteer for the program, which is run out of Journey Church. About 30 people currently receive meals, Kern said.

“We serve a lot of comfort-type food,” she said. A recent hot meal consisted of meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

Meals On Wheels also delivers special diet meals through Fairview Hospital for those with physician prescriptions.

Recipients, many of whom live alone, love getting visits from the drivers, Kern said. Deliveries are made weekdays around noon by the volunteer drivers.

“At least someone is checking on them almost daily,” she said.

Meals On Wheels is privately funded and does not receive any funding from federal, state or local governmental agencies.
