The Blue Streaks golf team is moving on to the state tournament in Columbus after finishing third as a team at The Legends of Massillon on Oct. 11.
Magnificat had a team score of 320, and the top three golfers on the team had solid matches in the 70s. Sophomore Ali Nageotte shot 76, freshman Jillian Hollis shot 78 and sophomore Cara Kelley shot 79 to lead the team. The remaining two players, freshman Julia Gentner and senior Alley Vonderau, shot 87 and 89 respectively.
“I was impressed with the low scores in this tournament,” said Magnificat head coach Katy Kahler. “The team as a whole had some difficulty on the greens at The Legends, so we plan to practice on fast greens to prepare for the Gray Course (in Columbus).”
Massillon Jackson High School took first in the tournament with a score of 302, and Medina Highland took second with a score of 311. Also advancing to state are Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin with a score of 328 and Brecksville-Broadview Heights with a score of 332.
“Those are the best six team scores we have seen in any tournament this season,” Kahler said. “There are some terrific golfers in the state, as the district scores show. I would say with our team being young, mostly sophomores and freshmen (Vonderau is the only upperclassman), we don’t have unrealistic expectations of winning the state tournament in 2011. Our more realistic goal is to improve our team score from last season and move up from our 12th position in the 2010 state tournament. This is just a great opportunity for our young team to experience the state tournament and increase their confidence as they continue to improve their golf games.”
