Lutheran West girls win triangular, boys and girls win Longhorn Relays

By Ryan Kaczmarski

The Lutheran West girls track team won a conference triangular meet against Fairview and Buckeye on Wednesday, and finished the week winning the Longhorn Relays.
The Longhorns were led by sophomore Johanna Ragland, who tied a school record in the shot put with a throw of 36’ 1.5”. Ragland also took first in the discus with a throw of 95’. Senior Nicole Swanson was first in high jump (4’8”). The 4×800 relay team of senior Marissa Nuti, senior Lindsay Tomola, junior Olivia Vasiloff and freshman Michaela Bierly was first with a time of 10:47, and the 4×400 team (Nuti, Tomola, Swanson and senior Ari Tomosula) also took first with a time of 4:37. Bierly was first in the 1600 meter run (5:52), Nuti won the 800 run (2:39) and Vasiloff won the 3200 (13:43).
“Our girls’ team had an excellent week,” Lutheran West head coach Joe King said. “We had a lot of girls hit (personal bests) and really have outstanding efforts.”
Fairview head coach Rich Friel was not disappointed with his teams’ performances.
“With our numbers lacking for the girls, we had a nice showing against Buckeye and Lutheran West,” Friel said. “Captain Lindsay Harwood started things off with a first in the (100 hurdles), followed by fellow captain Stephanie Miller taking a first in the 100m dash with a time of 12.8 seconds, first in the 400m dash (66.0), a first in the 4x200m relay along with Rehor, Danko, and Kilbane and a second-place finish in the 200m dash with a time of 27.7.
“Stephanie has been working hard in the offseason with indoor track and being in the weight room getting stronger, and today showed some payoff margins,” he added. “Freshman Olivia Howard took a first in the 300 low hurdles with a time of 52.6. Other notables were Hanna Tesema placing second in the discus along with Shannon Kilbane placing second in the 300 low hurdles. We are lacking some depth and experience this season, but for our first meet the girls had some good performances.”
Lutheran West started its first Lutheran West Relay Friday, that included both boys and girls teams. In the 60s and early 70s, the Longhorn Relays were a boys-only competition, but this year it was brought back with seven teams competing. The Longhorn girls won the relays. They scored firsts in the shot put (Johanna Ragland, Gabbie Schultz and Amanda Stephens); discus(Ragland, Schultz and Frankie Howell); and Long jump (Nicole Swanson, Olivia Maxwell and Maddie MacDowell, the same three girls also won the high jump). The 4×800 relay and the distance medley relay took firsts with Nuti, Vasiloff, Tomola and Bierly winning both events. The 4×400 also triumphed with Nuti, Tomola, Swanson and  Tomasula.
“Hosting the relays was a lot of fun for us,” King said. “We only have one meet this week (today) at home versus Wellington and Oberlin. We need a good training week with a lot of competitive meets on the horizon.”
The Lutheran West boys lost to Buckeye and Fairview on Wednesday. The Longhorns’ first-place finishes were recorded by senior Ryan O’Connor in the high jump (5’6”) and sophomore Clay Carper in the long jump (18’2”). Junior Peter Koza hit some personal bests finishing second in the 100 and 200 dashes (11.04 and 22.01). Junior Drew Fuchs took second in the 1600 meter run in 5:10.4.
“The boys had first-place finishes from the 4×800 team of Miles,Kerchenski, Wilkinson and Borsody; 4×200 team of Hvizdos, Wilkinson, Salamon and Beard; Miles in the 1600m run; the 4×100 team of Salamon, Seeh, Kish and Schmidt; and Beard in the 400m (53.3); Krabill in the 800m with a time of 2:10; and the 4×400 team of Beard, Salamon, Krabill and Wilkinson,” Friel said. “The boys struggled in the field events because of lack of depth and experience, but they are showing some good results for improvement.”
The Longhorn boys track team was first in the Lutheran West Relays. The Longhorns took first-place finishes in shot put (Pat Hofener, Travis Spillane and Gus Abuamsha); discus (Hofener, Lukas Hamlescher and Abuamsha); and high jump (Ryan O’Connor, Clay Carper).
The first places in running events were Matt Brown in the 1600 meter run (5:17.7) with Justin Watson second in the 1600 run (5:31.6); the distance medley team of Watson, Fuchs, Brown and Brian Giguere; and the sprint medley team of Ed Jones, Nick Knudsen, Peter Koza and Carper.
“Our boys had an excellent meet at the relay,” King said. “The field event athletes came through and our distance and sprint events were solid. Drew Fuchs, Justin Watson and Nick Knudsen are getting healthy. Peter Koza is looking great and Clay Carper has been a great addition.
“We need to keep getting better, and improved weather will also help.”
Fairview held its own relay meet on Friday, with the boys team finishing first and the girls team finishing second among the Division II schools participating.
“The Fairview boys had a nice showing on Friday, with first-place finishes by the 4×800 of Miles, Beard, Wilkinson and Krabil, the 4×400 team of Beard, Borsody, Salamon and Wilkinson and the jv college medley of Y. Tesema, Frazier, Hvizdos and Kilbain,” Friel said. “The girls struggled to fill all the events with numbers and we had a late scratch of our distance medley because of an injury. Newcomer Nicole Burger finished third in the mile, with a time of 5:57, while the shuttle hurdle team of Harwood, Howard, Kilbain, and Gladish took second.
“This was only our second meet of the season, and in past years we have had at least three  meets under our belt,” Friel added. “At this point of the season, we have potential but a lot of work to do, especially with our exchanges as we start to get more of a constant crew in each relay. We will be at Black River today and at the Ernie Moore Invitational on Friday in Doylestown.”
