The Lutheran West Longhorns continued their winning streak with a strong win over the Black River Pirates 60-38.
“This was a nice team win for us,” said Longhorns head coach Josh Campbell. “The girls are starting to play the way they are capable of. Black River put up a fight tonight.
“When we ran our zone trap it was real effective and we got steals off of them and were taking the sideline away,” Campbell added. When we weren’t taking the sideline away, they were getting layups.”
Leading the Longhorns were Lindsay Thomas with 20 points, Amanda Stephens with 14 points and Ari Tomasula with 9 points. The Longhorns were able to control the key player for the Pirates, Jessica Chidsey, while still maintaining their lead.
“She’s (Chidsey) predominately right handed but when you can knock down a shot on another foot on a play and there are balls she’s going after in the stands,” Campbell said. “She’s a competitor.”
After having a tough start, with only one win during their first eight games, this victory adds to the Longhorn’s only consecutive winning streak of the season with four games.
“We are starting to do what we wanted to do,” Campbell stated. “Everyone is contributing. Our goal this season was to have a shot at conference. We started off 1-7 and since then we’ve had a turnaround with the start of the New Year. We’re hoping that God has in store for us a little luck and that we’ll still have a shot at conference.
“Honestly we’re a different team,” he added. “When you start winning a few games it makes a world of difference.”
The Longhorns are now 5-7.
