The Rocky River Recreation Department has once again chipped away the ice at the Hamilton Ice Arena, and laid down turf for its indoor coed adult soccer leagues, with the summer session slated to begin June 13.
The league was started in 1995, and teams have come and gone over the last 18 years, but Colleen Mohney – and Team Oi – have been playing since the league’s inception.
“At the beginning (the league) was very competitive, and still is competitive,” Mohney said. “We always come back every single session that they have, because we really love playing there.
“It’s a fun league – it’s a lot of the same teams, each session, that you see out there – but it still is competitive.”
Not every member of Team Oi has been with the team for the entire time, but the core of Mohney’s team has not changed over the years.
“We’ve only lost a couple over the last few years, but everybody knows someone else (to play) and we bring them in,” she said. “A lot of our core people have been with the team for over 15 years.”
For a team to play in the league, each team must have three women and three men on the field at all times, and a major selling point to play in this league is that the rink still has the walls on it, so the teams are able to play the traditional indoor game, with the ball being played off the walls.
Team registration is $375 for an adult team, with a $55 discount for all Rocky River resident teams. There are also forfeit, turf rental and referee fees for each team. The registration deadline is June 10 for all teams. For more information, e-mail Jeff Wadell at email@example.com, call 440-356-5659 or go to www.rrcity.com/rec to download the registration form.
