Friday night on the gridiron

By Jim Horvath

Here’s a capsule look at how the Westshore football teams fared on opening night:

* Avon 21, Avon Lake 3
Wow!!!! Eagles take out the Shoremen in their own house. Coach Dlugosz isn’t a happy man right now. And, look out West Shore Conference….Wow!!!

* Westlake 6, North Ridgeville 0
A great win for the Demons and coach Campo in front of the home fans! They’ll look for a 2-0 start next Friday when they travel across the tracks to Bay. West Life will be there for that one. Follow me on Twittter to get a game-night report.

* Orange 34, Bay 14
A tough opener on the road for coach Gorius and the gang. Will probably be happy to be back home next Friday at Memorial Stadium.

* Highland 35, Rocky River 18
The Hornets broke this one open with 21 points in the second quarter. Coach Adams knows his defense needs to get better and it was probably a tough go against one of the area’s best playoff-tested teams.

* Padua 27, Olmsted Falls 10
Another tough game on the road for one of our area teams. The Bruins are notoriously hard to beat at home and they proved so again tonight against a veteran Bulldog squad.

* North Olmsted 35, Valley Forge 7
Forge isn’t going to be very good this year, but still an impressive home win for the Eagles and coach Ptacek. They scored 14 points in both the second and third quarters to pul away from the undermanned Patriots.

* Lorain 13, Midview 6
A win on the first time out for the new Lorain High.

* Parma 35, Midpark 13
No Meteors in sight in the Southwestern Conference race this year.
