Shoremen run rampant on Olmsted Falls in SWC rout
By Ryan Kaczmarski
It was not supposed to be this way. It was supposed to be a tough game between rivals that were both undefeated in the conference.
What happened on Friday night harkens back to a simpler time of “Student body left” for the Avon Lake running game as they thumped Olmsted Falls 42-13 at Memorial Stadium.
It was supposed to be a home game and senior night for Olmsted Falls, but due to the recent rainfall the Bulldogs’ field was unfit to play on.
The Shoremen (7-2, 6-0 in the Southwestern Conference) tallied 425 yards rushing in the game and had a 200 and 100 yard rusher. Senior Dontez Smith ran 24 times for 225 yards and sophomore Collin Lucas ran 12 times for 123 yards.
Avon Lake scored 35 unanswered points before Bulldogs senior Brennan Laird intercepted a pass thrown by Shoremen quarterback Chris Jedlicka to put Olmsted Falls on the Avon Lake four yard line. Two plays later, Laird ran in a 4-yard touchdown (PAT failed) to make the score 35-6 with six minutes left in the third quarter.
On the ensuing possession, Avon Lake mounted a 13-play, 69-yard touchdown drive to quell any thoughts of a Bulldog comeback, making the score 42-6.
Never giving up, the Bulldogs finished an 11-play, 91-yard drive for another touchdown, making the final score 42-13.
The Bulldogs need to finish the season with a victory, playing at North Olmsted on Friday at 7 p.m., to have a hope of a playoff berth and a possible SWC co-championship (if Avon Lake loses to Amherst).
