Final gun sounds on Week Eight

By Jim Horvath

So close, and yet so far.

I was driving home from the Bay-Fairview game and was able to hear the end of Westlake’s game at Avon Lake. It was a scoreless tie after four quarters of play, and the game was going into overtime.

Yes, really!

Westlake got the ball first and drove down to the Shoremen 1-yard line, but fumbled on fourth down and goal. Avon Lake scored on it’s first play of the OT to take a dramatic 6-0 win in a Southwestern Conference thriller.

Despite a monstrous defensive effort, the Demons failed to cash in on a win that would have given them a boat load of computer points and virtually assured them of a playoff spot in Division II. They now need to win out and hope for the best.

Also in the SWC, North Olmsted finally got it’s first league win with a 34-24 win over Midpark. The Eagles led 14-0 at the half and 27-0 after three quarters, but had to hold on for dear life as the Meteors put on a 24-point rally.

Also, Amherst remained tied with Avon Lake for first place with a 28-14 home winn over Brecksville. It was 14-14 at the half until the Comets put it away with a 14-point third quarter. Olmsted Falls also defeated Berea to stay in the playoff hunt.

In the Patriot Athletic Conference, Lutheran West got a HUGE win with a 14-6 home win over Clearview. The Longhorns built a 14-0 halftime lead and made it stand for their fourth win of the season to stay one game behind front-running Columbia in the Stripes Division.

In the West Shore Conference, Avon tuned up for its road trip to Fairview with a 35-0 thrashing of Midview. Rocky River stayed in the hunt with a 50-21 bombardment of visiting Vermilion. North Ridgeville beat up Firelands to stay one game behind Avon.

Future WSC member Lakewood defeated Cuyahoga Falls 20-14. Elyria Catholic plays at Cleveland Central Catholic Sturday afternoon.
