Fairview Park trash collection delayed due to union work stoppage

Fairview Park

A work stoppage by union employees at Republic Services is affecting trash collection in Fairview Park, the city’s service director said Monday morning.

In an e-mail sent to residents signed up for the city’s electronic newsletter, Jim Kennedy said trash collection in Fairview Park will be delayed one day this week through Saturday.

Republic officials notified the city Monday morning that its union officials had initiated a work stoppage.

“It is expected to last just one day with service resuming tomorrow,” Kennedy said in the e-mail.

The work stoppage has affected trash collection in numerous Ohio, according to media reports.

According to a press release from the Teamsters, Republic Services sanitation workers near Youngstown went on strike March 27. The work stoppage spread from there.

“Sanitation workers at other Republic locations have subsequently refused to work in a show of support of their striking colleagues,” the Teamsters’ press release stated.

The union alleges that Republic has illegally changed working conditions without bargaining and refused to provide pertinent information related to bargaining.
