Jim Axelrod, the national correspondent for CBS News, will visit Westlake next month to discuss his new book on running.

No tickets are required for the event, which will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Westlake Schools Performing Arts Center, 27830 Hilliard Blvd. Seating will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Axelrod’s appearance is sponsored by the Friends of Westlake Porter Public Library, Westlake City Schools and St. John Medical Center.

Entitled “In the Long Run: A Father, a Son, and Unintentional Lessons in Happiness,” the book describes Axelrod’s quest to run the 2009 New York Marathon and beat his late father’s times doing it. With his personal and professional lives at a crossroads, Axelrod found that the marathon challenge came to be much more than running.

Copies of the 2011 book, released earlier this year in a paperback edition, will be available for purchase and signing.

Axelrod joined CBS News in 1996. In 2002, he was among the CBS News correspondents who received an Emmy Award for the “CBS Evening News’” coverage of the Washington, D.C., sniper siege. He was the first television journalist to report live from Baghdad’s Saddam International Airport after its capture by U.S troops during the 2003 Iraq war. He served as chief White House correspondent for the network from 2006 through 2009.
