Barbecue chefs compete to benefit skate and bike park

Some of the best barbecue in Northeast Ohio lured more than 170 rib lovers to Bay Lodge on June 8 for an event to benefit Bay Skate & Bike Park.

A dozen amateur barbecue competitors were pitted against each other at the fourth annual Rib Rockin’ Cook-Off to raise funds for skate park upkeep and student scholarships. Guests paid $40 for a ticket to enjoy an evening of barbecued ribs, salads and cupcakes, live music and a raffle. Event organizer Lawrence Kuh said $5,000 was raised, exceeding the group’s goal. Sponsors of this year’s cook-off were Sillycone Inc. and Cafe Melissa.

Winner of this year’s competition was the Smokin’ Slovaks team, with Unkie Porkie’s in second place and the She’s Not Here, We’re in Charge team coming in third. Steve Underation of the Smokin’ Slovaks said his team has taken the first-place title three times in four years. He said their secret to success is four layers of flavor, with hardwood smoke, dry rub, sauce and finishing rub. “We thought our previous winning recipe was a little long in the tooth and it was time for revitalization. This year, we made a commitment to an all-new taste and whole new flavor,” he said. “We put a lot of time, thought and effort into what we did, and it worked. We really liked what we brought to the competition this year.”

This year’s event also featured a summer salad competition, with Jennifer Kuh and Niala Jones taking first and second prizes, respectively.
