“There are no losers in wrestling, just winners and learners.” That’s the motto at the heart of the new Avon Lake Wrestling Club, which will conduct information meetings and sign-ups for youth wrestlers Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Avon Lake High School Commons Area. The club is open to any child age 5 and older.
In a short time the fledgling non-profit club has managed to assemble an impressive team of accomplished coaches and dedicated parents with many years of wrestling experience, including head biddy and youth club coach Marcus Effner, a state champion at Garfield Heights and a two-time NCAA qualifier; assistant varsity coach Anthony Coleman, a state champion at Bellevue and a two-time NCAA qualifier; head varsity coach Nick Mayer, a two-year starter at Ohio University; and local standouts and long-time Learwood coaches Scott Peepers and Don George.
“I was born in a wrestling room,” Effner said. “At least that’s how it felt, growing up with a dad who was a college coach. It’s exciting to see how many kids and parents have already responded to the idea of this club.”
Mayer said one of the best things about wrestling, is it’s a sport where size doesn’t matter. Big or small, wrestlers are matched by age and weight.
“I was small, and had trouble fitting in, and competing in some of the other sports,” Mayer said. “When a wrestling coach turned me on to wrestling, it really changed my life.”
Peepers said wrestling is a great sport for building confidence, strength and balance, and also stressed that it’s fun.
“Parent’s always tell me it’s the perfect winter sport for kids,” Peepers said. “They get to roll around on the mats, and they can’t break anything.”
Practices will begin the week of October 28th. Youth wrestlers in grade K-2 will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m.; wrestlers in grades 3-6 will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.
Cost for the youth biddy season is $100, which includes a singlet, T-shirt, shorts, matches for the season, two open tournaments and several wrestling clinics. There is also a year round program which includes additional clinics, US freestyle card and registration to freestyle andfolkstyle tournaments for $200.
