Rabbi Mendel Jacobs is launching his outreach efforts to West Side Jews by holding Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services at the Westlake Recreation Center later this month.
The 5-mile run will start at 8:30 a.m. The course will take runners west on Center Ridge Road, south on Bradley Road, then back east to the hospital past Burns Lake and the Burns Lake Wildlife Area off White Oak Lane. The top male and female finishers in the five-miles run will each receive $500 in addition to a gold medal.
Nine businesses along Lorain Road have been designated as safe spots for children feeling threatened.
Under the auspices of the city’s Safe Routes to School program, theses locations are signified by stickers featuring a red circle and red schoolhouse. The Fairview Park Police Department at City Hall and the Gemini Center, the city’s recreation center, also serve as safe spots, increasing the total number of locations to 11.
Hungry deer and heavy rains have not been good for Martha Radca’s hosta plants this year, she told West Life. But Radca, who has about a dozen variations of hostas in her yard, said she doesn’t plan on replacing them because she loves the plant, which does well in the shade.
