Applications to fill the Westlake City Schools Board of Education seat being vacated by Andrea Rocco are due at 4 p.m. March 2. Board members will interview candidates the week of March 12.
According to a news release by the district, the board anticipates selecting the new member at its March 26 regularly scheduled meeting. The new board member will serve the remainder of Rocco’s term, which runs through the end of 2013.
Interested candidates must fill out an application, which can be obtained at district offices at 27200 Hilliard Blvd., or online at www.wlake.org. Applications are also available at each district school and at Westlake Porter Public Library, 27333 Center Ridge Road.
In a Jan. 23 statement released by the district, Rocco cited the part-time position she recently took in October as special counsel to Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald.
“As a result of County Executive FitzGerald’s policy that county cabinet employees not hold public office, I regrettably have to resign from my school board seat,” Rocco said in the statement. “My resignation will be effective March 6, my last regularly scheduled meeting will be Feb. 27.”
Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald told West Life that Rocco knew she would have to resign from the school board if she took the county job.
“She knew coming in that not holding an elected office is a requirement for taking the position,” he said. ‘It’s the same policy that’s been applied to others in the cabinet as well.”
FitzGerald cited as one example another former Westshore official, his current communications director, Nicole Dailey Jones, who previously served as Ward 3 councilwoman in North Olmsted.
“She had to resign her position as well,” FitzGerald said. “I give them a few weeks to wrap up whatever projects they’re working on in their previous position and then have them come to the county.”
