A social activist who has spent years investigating how Asian-based manufacturers treat their workers will speak at Cuyahoga Community College’s Westshore Campus, located at 31001 Clemens Road in Westlake, from 6 to 7 p.m. April 3.
Jim Keady, director of Educating For Justice, began investigating Nike’s labor practices for a theology class at a Catholic college in New York, St. John University. Keady had also been hired as a soccer coach for the team. According to the website, teamsweat.org, around the same time, the university’s athletic department signed an endorsement deal with Nike. Keady said he ultimately resigned rather than participate in the endorsement deal.
Keady produced a documentary on sweatshop abuses, including forced overtime and intimidation by supervisors, he alleged took place at Nike’s Indonesian factory entitled “Behind the Swoosh.” The documentary can be viewed online on YouTube.
Keady will also talk April 2 at 11 a.m. at Tri-C’s Eastern Campus Auditorium and at 1 p.m. April 3 at Tri-C’s Metropolitan Campus Theatre. Registration is required for the Westshore Campus talk and can be made by calling 216-987-5849. All presentations are free. His appearance is part of Tri-C’s 2012-2013 Celebrating Diversity Series.
