Dover Campus takes precautionary security steps following nearby threat

WESTLAKE – The Westlake City School District’s Dover campus – which consists of Dover Elementary School, Dover Intermediate School and Lee Burneson Middle School – briefly implemented a lockout status Tuesday morning after an employee of the Westlake post office said she would bring a gun to her workplace.

The postal employee never left her Strongsville home, Westlake police Capt. Guy Turner said. Police from that suburb went to the employee’s house, but she was not immediately arrested, he said.

Officers went to the Center Ridge Road post office, which was briefly closed Tuesday morning, Turner said.

As a precaution, Westlake police advised the school district to cancel outdoor activities at the Dover Campus, Turner said.

The school district alerted parents to the lockout in a notification on its app. During a lockout, indoor activities continue as usual but staff does not permit anyone to enter or exit the school building.

“It is important to note that our students were never in any danger and that there was no direct threat in our buildings,” the school district’s notification sated. “The lockout was simply a precautionary measure.”
