Bay boys, Magnificat girls bring home 14th-place finishes at state

There were many area athletes who made finals appearances over the weekend at the OHSAA Division I and Division II state swimming and diving championships at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. Several schools were also swimming in the team competition, with the Magnificat girls (Division I) and the Bay boys (Division II)topping the area teams with 14th-place place finishes in their respective divisions.
Topping the list of individual achievements was Bay High School’s Colin MacMillan, who found his way to the podium once, and scored four times in Division II competition. MacMillan took third in the 100-yard butterfly event, with a time of 51.27 seconds, ninth in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 21.80 seconds, and was the anchor of Bay’s ninth-place 200 free relay and 10th-place 400 free relay teams, which finished with times of 1:28.93 and 3:17.41, respectively.
Joining him for the 200 free relay were Mark Fischer, Matthew Thomas and his brother Kyle MacMillan. Fischer and brother Kyle, along with Jacob Melaragno, joined him for the 400 free relay finish.
Also finishing in scoring position in Division II boys action were Rocky River High School’s 200 medley relay team of Spencer Sheehan, Elijah Linville, Konrad Katterle and Jake Vehar, which finished in ninth place, with a time of 1:40.15. Vehar also finished in 15th place in the 100-yard freestyle, with a time of 48.47 seconds.

In Division I boys competition, Westlake High School’s Matt Akers took eighth place in the one meter diving competition, with a score of 471.75. St. Edward’s Nick Babson took 15th place in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 52.23 seconds. Babson also anchored the St. Edward 200 medley relay, which took 11th place with a time of 1:36.65, and the 400 free relay, which finished in 15th place with a time of 3:14.16. Joining Babson for the 200 medley relay were Josh Gluck, Mason Beck and Bob Lenart. Joining him with the 400 free relay was Lenart, Billy Chambers and Beck.
Avon High School’s Ben Brooks finished in ninth place in the Division I 200-yard individual medley, with a time of 58.19 seconds.
All the area girls finalists came out of the Division I meet, with Magnificat High School’s Taryn Zwissler and Rocky River High School’s Lauren Devorace making three scoring appearances each.
Individually, Zwissler finished in seventh place in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 56.88. She also participated in the sixth-place finishing 200 medley relay, along with Kathryn Presley, Alana Cartwright and Grace Monroe, which had a time of 1:46.55, and the 11th place 400 free relay, along with Monroe, Julia Pophal and Cartwright, which finished with a time of 3:33.53. Cartwright also had a 12th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:05.55.
Devorace finished ninth in the 200-yard freestyle, with a time of 1:52.25, and 12th in the 100 free, with a time of 52.03 seconds. She was also a part of the Rocky River 200 free relay team which finished in 14th place, along with Laura Banks, Rachel Salburg and Anna Brandt, with a time of 1:38.81. Banks also earned an eighth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 1:05.06.
Avon Lake High School’s Megan Peepers took 11th place in the one meter diving event, with a score of 436.95. North Olmsted High School’s Ismary Puentes finished in 11th place in the 50-yard freestyle, with a time of 24.14 seconds.
