A 33-year-old Lakewood man died Dec. 17 after slabs of granite fell on him while working at U.S. Marble and Granite.
Westlake police and fire department units were called to the Crocker Road workplace at 3:23 p.m. to respond to the accident. By the time police arrived, Mitchel R. Williams had been freed by his co-workers. But according to a police statement, Williams suffered life-threatening injuries after slabs of granite fell on him in the warehouse. A second employee was also struck a glancing blow by the slabs but did not require medical attention, police said.
Williams was transported by paramedics to St. John Medical Center and later airlifted to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he died. The Cuyahoga County medical examiner will rule on the cause of death. The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating the death.
