Educate your palate at wine tasting flight school

Educate your palate this week. Attend a wine tasting flight school at Wine Bar in Rocky River.

Every other Wednesday, Wine Bar Rocky River proves that school really can be fun. The 6:30 p.m. sessions are designed to teach you about various wines and what foods best pair with them. The tastings typically include five wines paired with five food samples. There are different themes for each session, so you can attend several and taste and learn new things every time. Flight school wine tasting classes are priced from $25 to $40 per person plus tax and tip.

While you are at Wine Bar Rocky River, you might want to try one of their summer menu selections, served on the outdoor patio. Share a sweet or savory cheese board with friends, or select an appetizer like Thai pork dumplings ($8), grilled artichokes with lemon-herb aioli ($9) or drunken goat cheese fondue served with toasted baguette and pita bread ($10). Salads include a strawberry and blue cheese salad, panzanella salad made with warm olive oil bread, classic wedge salad and Pacific Rim salad with mandarin oranges, peanuts and sesame soy dressing.

Sandwich offerings are ahi tuna ($10) or chorizo sliders ($9), and a house burger garnished with pancetta and cabernet-infused Boursin cheese ($11.50). House-made focaccia bread is topped with roasted red pepper mayonnaise, provolone cheese and arugula ($10).

Flatbread pizzas include the Margherita with Roma tomatoes and basil pesto ($12), white pizza with four cheeses and hot Italian sausage ($11.50), kale and wild mushrooms with goat cheese ($11.50) and crunchy red grapes with caramelized onions and mascarpone ($12).

Entrees are brick-pressed chicken with sherry wine glaze ($17), pan-seared scallops ($20), Bistro steak with chimichurri sauce ($20), salmon bouillabaisse (19.50) and grilled mahi mahi tacos ($16).

During the summer, Wine Bar Doggie Brunch is served on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Well-behaved pooches may accompany their owners to the Wine Bar patio. The brunch menu offers a variety of three-egg omelets, Belgian waffles with strawberries ($6), brioche French toast ($6) and breakfast tacos and burritos. The BLT flatbread is topped with smoked bacon, Roma tomatoes, romaine lettuce, a four-cheese blend and malt vinegar aioli ($12).

Happy hour is 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with select appetizers at half price.
