The Sweet Spot is celebrating a birthday, and you are invited

The Sweet Spot in Lakewood is marking its third anniversary this summer. To celebrate, the owners of the gelato shop are giving you a present.

The family-owned gelato shop is hosting its third birthday party from 2 to 9 p.m. on July 27. The party will include live music and a fun, citywide scavenger hunt with free gelato samples at each location. One lucky participant will win the grand prize of free gelato every day for one year.

“We love to celebrate birthdays,” Sweet Spot co-owner Celeste Blau said. “When we sat down to plan our third birthday party, we asked ourselves, ‘What can we do that’s something different?’ We decided to do something that would not only showcase us, but Lakewood as well. There is so much that is cool about Lakewood. We love it here.”

Blau said that they plan to highlight some of their favorite places in Lakewood. Clues to the locations will be provided, and there will be free gelato at each stop along the way. Those who finish the hunt for all four locations and bring their card back to The Sweet Spot by 4 p.m. will be entered into the raffle for the grand prize. Indie-folk musician Diana Chittester will provide live musical entertainment from 7 to 9 p.m. at the shop.

“We’re very excited to celebrate our third birthday with the community,” Blau said. “Without their support, we wouldn’t be where we are today. This event is a great way to show our thanks, celebrate the occasion and have some fun showing off Lakewood. Who doesn’t want the chance to win free gelato for an entire year?”

Blau and her husband, parents and brother, co-owners of The Sweet Spot, will be at the shop to greet their fellow celebrants. A former marketing executive, Blau said she always wanted to own an ice cream shop. “I was driving on the highway to work one day and thought, ‘What would really make me happy?’ The answer was ice cream. I told my brother about my idea for an ice cream store, and he said that he wanted to do that, too. That same year, we all went on a family vacation to Italy and really enjoyed the gelato there. So, we decided that we should open a gelato shop in Cleveland.”

The Sweet Spot, 17804-06 Detroit Ave., offers what Blau calls “American gelato,” in flavors ranging from tried-and-true classics like butter pecan and chocolate chip to new customer favorites like dark chocolate with sea salt and cinnamon caramel swirl. Gelato is similar to ice cream, except that it is made with less cream and more milk. The gelato at The Sweet Spot is made in-house using Ohio milk and cream from cows not treated with growth hormones, and with unrefined sugar. Many fruits, nuts and spices are purchased from farmers markets and local businesses, according to Blau. The Sweet Spot also sells gelato birthday cakes.
