Give Dad an early treat this year for Father’s Day. Take him to the World Beer Festival on June 14 at the Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica.
“With 22 Ohio breweries in the mix, the World Beer Festival is a great place to come try all of your local favorites in one place,” festival producer Daniel Bradford said. “With sessions and demos by local beer experts, it promises to be both educational and delicious.”
Many Ohio breweries are returning for the second year of the festival. The list includes Great Lakes Brewing Co., Hoppin’ Frog Brewery, Fat Head’s Brewery, Buckeye Brewing, Cornerstone Brewing Co., Rivertown Brewing Co., Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, Black Box Brewing Co., Portside Brewery, Lagerheads Brewing Co., Elevator Brewing Co., Rockmill Brewery, Great Black Swamp Brewing Co., The Brew Kettle Production Works and Griffin Cider Works. Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. and Four String Brewing Co. will make their first appearance at the festival. A complete list of participating breweries and a partial beer list can be found at www.worldbeerfestival.com.
The beer list boasts an exciting selection this year, including rare beers like El Lupulo Libre from The Brew Kettle Production Works. Just a few months ago, El Lupulo Libre was crowned grand champion of the National Imperial IPA Championship. “We wanted to make a beer that could hold its own against any other double IPA, and I guess we did,” Jack Kephart, Brew Kettle head brewer, noted. “This is our third batch, and I am glad we are able to bring it to the World Beer Festival.”
General admission tickets to the festival are $40 and include a tasting glass and 40 taste tickets to sample from more than 200 different beers. VIP admission tickets are $75 and offer the same number of tasting tickets plus a bonus hour of admission, access to a private hospitality area with private bathrooms, an upscale food buffet and a selection of beers not available to the general public. The festival has two sessions from noon to 5 p.m. for VIPs and 1 to 5 p.m. for general admission. Tickets can be purchased online at www.worldbeerfestival.com or at the Great Lakes Brewing Co. gift shop.
Great Lakes Brewing Co. and Cigar City Brewing are brewing a collaboration beer called Wandering Pelican Black Lager. The beer will be available in the Great Lakes Brewing Co. Brewpub and in the gift shop. A limited amount of the lager will be released on draft in the Great Lakes distribution market. Cigar City Brewing will release Wandering Pelican Black Ale in cans.
The name Wandering Pelican pays homage to a brown pelican who made the journey from Florida to Ohio’s Lake Erie coast last summer. Swapping salt water for fresh, feeding on shad instead of mullet, the pelican made Lake Erie his home for several months and became an unlikely local celebrity. The beer honors this courageous friend who wandered off the beaten path to find a home.
Wandering Pelican Black Lager is a medium-bodied beer with smoky, roasted tones. It pairs well with hearty foods like jambalaya, sausage and meatloaf.
