Winetasting is fundraiser for Matthew’s Lending Library

Local wine merchant Minotti’s hosted its 13th annual Spring Fling fundraiser to benefit Matthew’s Lending Library. Based in Lakewood, the charity was established in 1991 to provide therapy equipment and specially adapted toys to children and young adults with special needs. The event was held at Avon Oaks Country Club. While Matthew’s Lending Library was the beneficiary of the night’s proceeds, the low ticket price was a bargain for wine aficionados who filled the club’s banquet facilities. Guests seemed to be a healthy mix of supporters of Matthew’s Lending Library and casual to serious oenophiles. All had a good time.

Over 150 wines were available for tasting, so sensible samplers could comfortably restrict themselves to one wine type, such as pinot noir, and be able to sort through the differences through a dozen or more vintners’ offerings. Representatives of the wine distributors were knowledgeable. They were supplemented by equally informed Minotti’s staff and even some game volunteers.

This tasting was characterized by a wide range of not only varieties, but also by cost per bottle. Longtime area distributor Heidelberg represented three companies, and their tables featured many amazing and high-end wines that are not often available at tastings.

A silent auction provided additional funds for Matthew’s Lending Library. At one end of a long table of auction items was a gift basket from St. Edward High School. Way at the other end, in an “equal but distant” position, was a similar gift basket from rival St. Ignatius High School. Kudos to the silent auction team for their political correctness! Amazingly rich and varied desserts completed the evening, and everyone went home richer in experience and knowledge.
