Westlake musical ensembles play all day Saturday at PAC

By Kevin Kelley

The daylong showcase of the Westlake City Schools’ orchestral and choral ensembles, known as Music a la Mode, returns to the Performing Arts Center stage Saturday. The Westlake Schools Performing Arts Center is located at Westlake High School, 27830 Hilliard Blvd.

Fifth-graders through seniors will display their musical skills in bands and choirs. The event begins at 11 a.m. with the fifth-grade choir. It’s scheduled to conclude around 8:30 p.m. with a performance by Westlake High School’s symphonic band.

Now in its 59th year, Music a la Mode is the Westlake Music Boosters’ biggest fundraiser of the year. Admission is $8 for adults 19 and older. There is no cost for those 18 and younger.

The French phrase “a la mode” literally means “in the style,” or “trendy.” The phrase also means “served with ice cream.” The latter term in the event’s title comes from the event’s origin. The first Music a la Mode was an old-fashioned ice cream social that took place outdoors at Reed Field at the current Lee Burneson Middle School.
