The Avon softball team hammered the runs home in a 14-0 thumping of Elyria Catholic in a West Shore Conference contest May 2. The Lady Eagles followed up with a doubleheader split against North Royalton in a nonconference matchup the following day. Avon is now 16-3 overall and 9-1 in the WSC.

The game against Elyria Catholic was called after five-and-a-half innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Junior pitcher Anna Edwards improved to 6-0 on the mound and struck out five batters, gave up just two walks and two hits.

Avon sophomore Kaylee Morton drove in six runs with two doubles. Alex Kozich finished with two hits, three RBIs and one run.

Avon defeated North Royalton 3-2 in the first game. North Royalton won the next one by the same score, 3-2.

“The difference was we had six errors in the second game,” Avon head coach Ken Matuszak said. “Senior Rachael Poling pitched and won the first game, making her record to 7-2. Freshmen Dani Austinson lost the second game and dropped her record to 3-1. Both pitchers pitched great to a good hitting North Royalton team.”

Edwards is hitting .446 with 22 RBIs for the season. Sophomore Olivia Kula is batting .438. Dill is hitting .390 with 18 RBIs. Junior Ally Sumser has four home runs and 20 RBIs. Avon is currently hitting .369 as a team.

On the mound, Poling is 7-2 and has 70 strikeouts in 52 innings. Her ERA is 1.88. Edwards is 6-0 and has 52 strikeouts in 39 innings. Her ERA is 1.43

Austinson is 3-1 and has 20 strikeouts in 23 innings. Her ERA is 1.85.

Avon is aiming to continue its winning ways in the WSC, hoping to lock up at least a share for the league crown.

“We are in second place and play at Midview on Wednesday,” Matuszak said. “We lost to Midview the first time around. We have a tough game at Vermilion (May 5), and if all goes we’ll have a showdown with Midview for a share of the conference championship on Wednesday.

“We have played well as of late. This week is big for us. Our three senior seniors – captain catcher Emily Rogers, outfielder Cyd Clark and pitcher, first baseman Rachael Poling – have done a tremendous job leading this team to a 16-3 record.”

Avon will host Berea in the Division I sectional playoff opener May 14 at 4:30 p.m.
