Rocky River

Former city Councilman and longtime Rocky River resident Warren (W.B.) Smith passed away Feb. 28 at the age of 89.

“He was truly a gentleman. He was well-known. You couldn’t find anyone who didn’t get along with W.B.,” City Council President Jim Moran said.

Mayor Pam Bobst added that when she was new to council, Smith “took me under his wing” and helped her learn about the workings of the city’s government. She also recalled Smith’s fondness for chocolate-covered graham crackers, which could always be found in his desk drawer.

Smith served as Ward 2 councilman from 1988 until 1999. City Council Clerk Misao Kurokawa worked for Smith in his financial planning office for 18 years, and remembered his devotion to the city. “He was a true gentleman. He always cared about the residents of the city. He was a good person,” she said. Smith was active with Kiwanis but Kurokawa said that he decided he wanted to do more for the city, and decided to run for council, winning on his first try.

She also said that it was Smith who suggested she apply for the council clerk job when the position became available shortly after his retirement from council in 1999.

Smith is survived by his children Tracy and Bradley and grandchildren Jennifer Klimek, Heather, Megan and Adam, as well as his sister Sue George of Plano, Texas. His wife, Patricia, and daughter Sandra Smith are deceased.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to Annie’s Place at The Harbor Court, 22900 Center Ridge Road in Rocky River.
