City firefighters have scheduled a practice burn doubleheader for the next two weekends for a pair of adjacent Lorain Road houses.
Fire Chief Ed Schepp said the homes’ owner, Dale Schmidt, invited the department to utilize the houses at 31512 and 31530 Lorain for department training. He said the firefighters will be at the homes from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Nov. 23 and 24. The homes are located across the street from the North Olmsted Soccer Sportsplex.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to work inside actual houses and work on training,” he said. “We don’t get a lot of opportunities to do this kind of training inside actual homes, so we really appreciate what the owner is doing for us.”
Schepp said the department wanted to let the general public know about the practices before the actual event.
“For someone driving by who didn’t know that we were practicing and conducting drills, it will look pretty realistic,” he said. “There’s going to be controlled fire, smoke, ambulances, fire units, firefighters, mannequins on the ground, so there’s going to be a lot of action going on at the scene.”
Schepp said there will be a variety of training going on.
“We’ll be able to do some room-to-room drills, have different fire and rescue scenarios and find other ways to practice what we might encounter in actual house fire or rescue situations,” he said. “It certainly will allow us to better our training together as a department.”
Schepp said the exercise will be kept to just the North Olmsted firefighters and emergency workers.
