The fifth annual Cleveland Beer Week, a nine-day celebration of craft brews, takes place Oct. 18 through Oct. 26 and features hundreds of beer-sipping events at bars, restaurants and grocers.
Cleveland Beer Week is a not-for-profit celebration that raises awareness of the craft beer industry and the rich tradition of brewing in Ohio. More than 350 events are planned around town, including beer tastings, food pairings and dinners, limited-edition keg tappings and educational programs. Several of the main events raise funds to support a local charity.
“We are pleased to again partner with Jimmy Malone and the Malone Scholarship Fund in 2013,” event director Christine Montague said. “All net proceeds from our flagship events benefit this important fund that has provided nearly $2 million in higher education scholarships to area students.”
“Collaboration Kickoffs” starts the week at 7 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 18, and features seven small-batch collaboration brews served on draft at participating breweries. The brewery collaborations include Market Garden, Indigo Imp and Rocky River Brewing: Tallboy Wheat, a cocoa and hazelnut Dunkelweisen; Thirsty Dog and Portside Brewery: Evil Monk, a bourbon barrel-aged Black Belgian Tripel; Brew Kettle and Willoughby Brewing: Collaborator, a Dopplebock; Cornerstone and Lager Heads: Pancake Porter, a maple, bacon and coffee Oatmeal Porter; Fat Heads and Chardon BrewWorks: Wango Tango Mango, an India Pale Ale; Buckeye, Black Box and Ohio Brewing: Tripel Cherry Delight, a Belgian Tripel with cherries; and Great Lakes and Cellar Rats: Berlot, a strong ale aged in wine barrels.
A new event this year, “Lebowski Bowling With Lagunitas,” takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 19 at the Lakewood Winking Lizard, 14018 Detroit Ave. Featuring bowling, a costume contest and a screening of “The Big Lebowski,” the event will showcase Lagunitas beers. Prizes will be awarded for best bowler, worst bowler, best average score and best costume. Advance tickets are required at $15 a person and include two half-games of bowling, two beer tickets and appetizers. For every strike bowled, Lagunitas will donate $1 to the Malone Scholarship Fund.
“Culture Yourself: A Premier Beer and Cheese Pairing” returns to Great Lakes Brewing Co.’s tasting room in Ohio City on Oct. 20. Because of the event’s popularity, there are two sessions at 2 and 6 p.m. The sessions feature 14 top area breweries pouring beers that have been paired with artisanal cheeses. Brewers, cheese makers and cheese experts will be on hand for this educational tasting event. Advance tickets are $35 a person and include 25 two-ounce beer samples and cheese pairings.
“BREWzilla: A Monster of a Beer Tasting” wraps up Beer Week from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Galleria at Erieview in downtown Cleveland. There will be more than 80 participating breweries, a special “Ohio Brewery” area, a Gnome Garden with Belgian beers and appetizers that pair well with craft brews. Brewer’s Circle tickets are $75 and include VIP entrance, tastes of rare brews, food pairings in the Brewer’s Circle Lounge, a commemorative T-shirt, 25 tasting tickets and a tasting glass. General admission tickets are $50 and include 25 tasting tickets, a tasting glass and complimentary appetizers.
