Pirates fall to Midview in WSC opener

Rocky River went into Friday night’s game coming off a convincing 35-6 victory over Warrensville, and hoped the momentum could push into the West Shore Conference schedule. It was not to be, as Midview went into Rocky River Stadium not once, but twice last weekend, and ended up with a 42-27 victory over the Pirates Saturday evening.

The Pirates led 6-0 early Friday night on a 64-yard Matt Lowry touchdown run (PAT failed), but Midview came driving back for the 7-6 lead, the drive being capped by a Brett Zupancic run from 1 yard out (Brendan Matcham kick).

On the ensuing drive, Rocky River returned the favor, with a 40-yard Patrick Connors touchdown reception from Lowry (Alex Theiling kick) to put the Pirates up 13-7. Midview would go on to score two touchdowns in the second quarter before play had to be suspended until the next afternoon, due to thunderstorms in the area.

When play resumed on Saturday, the teams each had failed drives, resulting in punts. The Pirates would then cut the deficit to 21-19, when Lowry found Theiling for a 20-yard touchdown pass. Rocky River would then fake the point after, but Theiling’s pass attempt went incomplete.

Midview went on three more scoring drives to put the game out of reach before the Pirates added a late score when Lowry tossed a 31-yard touchdown pass to Evan Nugent. Lowry would then run in the 2-point conversion.

Lowry would end up running 17 times for 85 yards, and went 18-37, for 229 yards. Travis Smith rushed 14 times for 119 yards for the Pirates.

Avon rolls Rangers

Avon running back Gerret Choat rushed for three touchdowns and wide receiver Braeden Friss caught three touchdown passes as the Eagles improved to 4-0 (1-0 in the WSC) with a 52-7 win over Lakewood (1-3, 0-1 in the WSC) on Saturday. Choat’s touchdown runs were from 4, 1 and 40 yards. Friss caught two scoring passes from Tommy Glenn (62 and 72 yards) and one from Jake Sopko (17 yards).

Sophomore Michael Goolsby ran back a 99-yard kick return for Lakewood’s only score (Dan Matthews kick).

Rockets grounded by Elyria Catholic

Elyria Catholic went on a 38-point roll on Saturday before Bay quarterback Jake Best tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to Rex Sunahara (kick failed), in the fourth quarter to avoid the shutout. With the loss, Bay remains winless at 0-4 (0-1 in the WSC).
