Council, school board candidates invited to Oct. 1 LWV forum

By Kevin Kelley

The Nov. 5 ballot has three contested City Council races and one contested school board race. Westlake voters will have the opportunity to hear from the candidates Oct. 1 when the League of Women Voters holds a candidates night at Westlake Porter Public Library. The forum will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the library, located at 27333 Center Ridge Road.

The three Westlake City Schools Board of Education candidates vying for two seats are slated to start the forum. Barb Leszynski, a retired North Olmsted Middle School teacher who was appointed to the school board in March 2012, is seeking election to a full, four-year term Nov. 5. John Finucane, the president of a shipping services business who served as treasurer for current board member Tony Falcone’s successful 2011 campaign, is also running. Brad Lamb, a bailiff at the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court is the third candidate. Lamb served as president of the Fairview Park City Schools Board of Education in 2010 and 2011.

Candidates in the three contested council races are scheduled to speak at 7:30 p.m. The Ward 1 candidates, seeking to succeed longtime Councilman Ed Hack, are Shamus Cusick and Lynda Appel. Current Board of Education member Nate Cross and Nick Nunnari, the assistant service manager at John Lance Ford, emerged from a five-person primary race to reach the general election for the Ward 2 seat. Current Ward 2 Councilman Jim Connole decided not to seek re-election. Voters in Ward 6 will see a rematch of the 2009 race in which incumbent Mark Getsay defeated Robert Koenig.

The standard League of Women Voters candidates night format will be used. Candidates will give short opening and closing remarks. Audience members will have the opportunity to submit written questions, which will be screened and read by the League’s moderator.
