High school girls across the state were treated to a variety of fun golf skills sessions and played a few instructional holes with LPGA tour professionals Barb Mucha and Janice Moodie before competing in the Ohio Girls Golf Foundation (OGGF) Open July 15 at Avon Oaks Country Club in Avon.

“I hope the girls leave this tournament with more than just the excitement of competition, but also with great memories as well as new acquaintances,” Teen Burke, OGGF president, said. “With the growing opportunities in girls golf over the past years, those connections will become a big part of their lives.”

Despite a heat index in the triple digits, the girls toughed it out and many had their best scores of the season thus far. In the hard-fought tournament, top individual honors went to Kaitlin Neumann of Avon, with a score of 77. Other top scores include Corynn Krieg of Avon (83), Amanda Rom of Medina (83), Julia Gentner of Rocky River (84), Abby Grospitch of North Royalton (84), Alex Mills of St. Joseph Academy (85), Lindsay Keefe of St. Joseph Academy (89), Kaitlin Rose of St. Joseph Academy (91), Anna Schatschneider of Avon (91) and Mikki Sherman of Medina (91).

Medina took top honors in the team competition with a (359), followed by Avon (364) and St. Joseph Academy (371). Other schools participating included Bay, Copley and Warren JFK.

“I encourage girls of every ability to take part in all that we offer – from college scholarships to instructional clinics, and financial aid, as well as the Open,” OGGF tournament Director Tom Rider, who also coaches the Warren JFK team, said.

Also at the event, six girls were presented college scholarships: Rachel Jeswald from Poland Seminary High School, Jessica Hespen from Nordonia High School, Ciera Miller from Bay High School, Kaitlin Neumann from Avon High School, Nicole Anselmo from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School and Daisha Dancy from Copley High School. Over the years, the foundation has awarded $97,000 to more than 100 girls.

The OGGF’s mission is to encourage, sponsor and support the game of golf for girls by providing college scholarships, golf training programs, and financial assistance to attend designated golf tournaments. Since the foundation was established in 1994, the number of girl’s high school golf teams in Northeast Ohio has grown from none to more than 250.
