North Olmsted residents Regan McNamara, age 16, and Maddie McNamara, age 14, have recently ranked highly nationally and internationally on the sport karate scene. Their most up-to-date tournament was the USA National Karate-do Federation (USA-NKF) karate nationals. Maddie placed third for her age group and experience level in kata, choreographed forms, and kobudo, weapons forms. She also became a national champion in kumite, or point sparring. Regan ranked third in the country for kumite and fourth in the country for kata in the advanced division. Both girls also competed in the World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF) World Championships in October with the U.S. team, which took place in Novi Sad, Serbia. Maddie ranked ninth in the world for her respective age group and experience level in kata, while Regan placed seventh in the world in kumite. Maddie and Regan spend much of their time training with instructors Ralph Febbo and Larry Whelan at Northeast Martial Arts Academy. They look forward to training for and competing in more large tournaments.
