Continental Cup returns to Northeast Ohio

Nearly 3,000 young athletes from across the globe will descend on Cleveland July 4-7 for the eighth annual Continental Cup International Youth Sports Festival, presented by Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission announced. The Continental Cup gives athletes from across the globe an opportunity to compete against and learn from one another in an exciting, cross-cultural environment. The 2013 Continental Cup will feature four international tournaments: AC Milan Continental Cup Soccer Tournament, Cleveland Indians Charities Continental Cup Baseball Tournament, Cleveland Cavaliers Continental Cup Basketball Tournament and Continental Cup Volleyball Tournament.

More than 1,000 international athletes, travelling over 50,000 combined miles, are expected to participate in the festival this year. Countries represented will be Bahrain, Barbados, Canada, China, Greece, Italy, Kenya and Nepal.  American athletes from Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, West Virginia, Illinois and Connecticut will also compete.

“The Continental Cup continues to thrive here in Northeast Ohio, bringing together thousands of athletes from all over the world for competition and cross-cultural exchange,” said David Gilbert, President and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. “This event was created to promote internationalism and spur economic activity in Greater Cleveland and this year’s rendition will once again accomplish those goals.”

The festival will kick off on July 4 with a free opening ceremony and cultural festival at Quicken Loans Arena beginning at 6 p.m. The Cleveland community is invited to welcome athletes from across the nation and around the world and take part in interactive entertainment from several area attractions and organizations on the arena floor. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. and is a perfect way to start downtown Fourth of July festivities. The opening ceremony will conclude prior to the city of Cleveland’s Fourth of July fireworks. $5 parking is available at Tower City Center for opening ceremony attendees.

The AC Milan Continental Cup tournament games will take place at the North Coast Premier Soccer Complex in Seville, Ohio. The Cleveland Indians Charities Continental Cup tournament will take place at Victory Sports Park in North Ridgeville, with the championship game of the U14 division being played at Progressive Field at 5:30 p.m. on July 7.
