JAPANESE DANCE: The Fairview Park Branch Library will present Sho-Jo-Ji Japanese Dancers at 2 p.m. Saturday in the lower-level meeting room. The group was formed in 1955 under the sponsorship of the local branch of the Japanese American Citizens League to preserve the traditional dances of Japan.
Dressed in kimonos, the Sho-Jo-Ji Japanese dancers will perform classical dances from Japan and demonstrate how to wear kimonos and obi belts. To register, visit www.cuyahogalibrary.org or call the Fairview Park Branch Library at 440-333-4700. The library is located at 21255 Lorain Road.
MUSICAL WORLD PREMEIRE: A musical composition by Dan Shell was performed for the first time before an audience May 14 during a concert at Lorain County Community College’s Stocker Arts Center in Elyria. The piece was performed by The Black River String Quartet. Shell is a member of the Fairview Park Historical Society.
DESIGN CONTEST: Here’s a reminder that the competition for designs to go on boulevard banners along the main streets of Fairview Park is still under way. The city’s master plan update, released in March, called for a marketing plan for the downtown area and a citywide signage plan. The design contest is part of that marketing program.
A panel made up of city officials, residents and representatives of community organizations will judge the entries. The city reserves the right not to adopt any of the submitted entries for the banner. If a submission is chosen, the designer will be publicly recognized and receive a $100 cash prize.
City employees are not eligible to enter the competition. There is no limit to the number of entries an individual may submit. However, each entry must be accompanied by an entry form, which can be downloaded from the city’s website at www.fairviewpark.org/city-banner-competition.html.
Designs must include the words “Fairview Park” and include no more than three colors. The banners on which the design will be placed will measure 30 by 60 inches. Entries should be e-mailed to Matthew Hrubey, development administrator with the city, at firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline is 4 p.m. July 12.
