The Westlake Recreation Department has announced its spring-summer coed bocce league. The league will play on Tuesday nights for seven weeks, plus playoffs, starting May 28. The Dara Hosta/Olmsted Spirit 5K Race/Walk will be held May 25. Race day registration and check-in will be at Olmsted Falls High School in Olmsted Falls from 7 to 8:30 a.m. for the 5K race and two-mile walk. Free refreshments and breakfast buffet will be available. All participants will receive a T-shirt and raffle ticket for a chance to win free prizes from area businesses. All money raised, after expenses, goes toward college scholarships for Olmsted Falls High School seniors who have shown their school and/or community spirit by the activities they were involved in during their lifetime. The 4oth Annual Phil Bova Baseball Camp will be held June 17-21 at the Westlake Recreation Center. The camp features an outstanding staff with more than 200 combined years of experience. Professional, college and high school coaches will be on hand daily, providing individual instruction for all age levels, along with six batting cages in use daily and a “Competition Day” to evaluate campers in throwing, hitting and bunting. Games will be played daily on seven fields. Every camper gets a hat and shirt, and a Best Camper plaque will be awarded in each age group.
Lunch is provided daily. Guest speakers will be on hand to share their expertise. Each camper will have a professional camp photo to take home. There will be inside demonstration instruction during inclement weather. The ratio of staff to campers is 1:10.
Camp Schedule and Information
The planned daily schedule will have a morning session and then two sessions in the afternoon. You will then be able to apply what you learned at camp to your games afterward. A typical day will be as follows: 8:15 a.m. – arrive at Westlake baseball field ready to play; 11:20 a.m. – lunch provided; 12:30 a.m. – back on field for instruction; 1 p.m. – instructional age group games; 2:30 p.m. – individual instruction or stations; and 4 p.m. – depart for the day. Camp cost: $235.00 per camper. Includes instruction and lunch for all five days, shirt, hat, camp photo and evaluation. What to bring: Glove; baseball shoes or tennis shoes; water bottle; bat; practice pants; personal attire (socks, supporters, etc.). New this year are team discounts. The Cleveland Indians once again will offer summer baseball camps for children ages 6-14 in eight area suburbs including Fairview Park, where the camp will be held at Bohlken Park on June 18-19. Each camp will consist of two, two-hour sessions and will take a comprehensive approach to teaching the game of baseball. Summer camp instructors will focus on throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and base running. At the completion of the second day of camp, each child will receive a fair evaluation and additional advice on how to improve their game. All camp times will be from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for 6- to 10-year-olds and 12:30-2:30 p.m. for 11- to 14-year-olds. All campers receive a free Indians T-shirt and two tickets to see the Indians face the Houston Astros Sept. 21 as part of Cleveland Indians Youth Baseball Day. Prior to that day’s game, each child is invited to participate in a pregame parade around the warning track at Progressive Field. Cost is $79 per two-day session.
New this summer to the Indians summer camps is the Progressive Field of Dreams Camp, a three-day session at Progressive Field July 16, 17 and 19. The camp runs from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. each day, and campers will participate in drills on the field and in the team’s bullpen and indoor batting cages, while also getting a tour of the visitors clubhouse. All participants will receive an Indians flex-fit hat, a T-shirt and a free on-field photo, as well as a report card with feedback and tips for improvement following the camp.
