Gordon Square continues to grow as arts district

The West Side arts district known as Gordon Square declared that it is “Hip 2B Square” at its third annual fundraiser. Held at the 78th Street Studios just north of Lake Avenue, a large crowd was on hand to celebrate all things artistic. Corporate supporters were treated to a VIP reception early in the evening. Along with a jazz trio, they enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres along with beer and wine.

A large number of studios were open, in which drawings, paintings, jewelry and other creations were available. The space was at one time home to some American Greetings artists and lines. Among the open galleries was the Cleveland West Art League, where artists who can’t sustain an entire gallery themselves can exhibit in a group setting.

As other guests arrived, food offerings were expanded. One of the newest of the “boutique” theater companies, Blank Canvas, presented a song from “Making a Musical.” Body artist Nikki Rettman gave guests henna tattoos and explained the long tradition of henna ritual art. Guests were creative themselves and decorated a wall with words and pictures explaining “why I love Gordon Square Arts District.” Just about everything was mentioned, from the Capitol and Cleveland Public theaters, to the restaurants.

Hip 2B Square honored Cleveland Councilman Matt Zone and Michelle Zone, who grew up and continue to work in the neighborhood. The value in strong neighborhoods such as Gordon Square is indisputable. While many of the guests were from the neighborhood, the corporate sponsorships drew in attendees from a wide area. One of the Hip 2B Square chairpersons, Jeff Moreau, lives in Rocky River. Perhaps the biggest cheer of the night came when his restaurant, Sweet Moses, was mentioned. I guess arts supporters like ice cream as well.
