School board places operating levy on ballot

By Kevin Kelley

As expected, the Westlake City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to place a 5.9-mill operating levy on the May 7 ballot.

The continuing levy will cost homeowners $15 per month for every $100,000 of property value beginning next year. The levy is expected to raise a little more than $8 million annually, Treasurer Mark Pepera said.

The 5.9-mill figure was settled on based on results of a January telephone survey of 400 likely voters. The survey, conducted by Triad Research Group, indicated that 55 percent would definitely or probably support a 5.9-mill tax increase.

The district’s financial forecast sees deficits appearing before the end of the 2014-2015 school year unless a new operating levy is passed or cuts are made.

The most recent operating levy, passed in September 2006, was for 6.9 mills. District officials estimated that levy would fund the district for four years, but it has sufficed up to today.
